Google Now Shows Answers, Not Links — What That Means for Your Business

AI Overviews changed search: instead of a list of links, your customer gets a finished answer. Here's where Google pulls that answer from, and what to actually do to make sure it's your business in it — no magic, no wasted budget.

A customer types "mechanic near me" or "men's haircut near me" into Google. A year ago they got a list of ten blue links and picked one themselves. Today, right at the top, they see a finished answer stitched together by AI: a few business names, hours, a rating, a "call" button. Half the time they never scroll past it.

And that's the whole game: if your business isn't in that answer, for half your customers you simply don't exist — even though you "show up on Google."

Where Google pulls that answer from

There's a myth that AI in Google is some separate, mysterious world with its own rules. It isn't. AI Overviews read the same index as regular search — they take the results Google already trusts and summarize them into one answer. There's no separate "AI ranking" you can game with a trick.

For a local business, one source matters most: your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). That's where the AI pulls your name, hours, phone, address, and reviews — and hands them to the customer as fact. If your profile is current and active, you make it into the answer. If it's dead or has wrong info, the AI cites your competitor instead.

Straight talk: there is no such thing as "AI optimization"

Let me start with something nobody's going to tell you, because there's no money in it for them. There is no separate "AEO" or "AI optimization" service. Since the AI reads the same index as regular Google, good SEO is AI search optimization. They're two names for the same thing.

If someone is selling you an "artificial intelligence optimization package," they're selling you fear of a new buzzword. Google says this itself, in its own guidelines.

What actually works

  • A current, active Google Business Profile. This is the number one lever for local AI visibility right now. Correct info, the right category, photos, replying to reviews.
  • A healthy website. A site that loads fast, works on a phone, and isn't broken. Google calls this Core Web Vitals — in plain terms: the site just has to work.
  • Real reviews. Not bought, not faked — genuine and steady. Those build the trust the AI cites.
  • Clear, useful content. Written for a human, not for a bot.

Nothing exotic. This is basic hygiene you should have anyway — and now it also decides whether the AI points to you.

What NOT to do (because it's money down the drain)

  • An llms.txt file — Google flatly says it does nothing. Anyone "installing one for an extra fee" is doing nothing.
  • Chopping content "into pieces for AI" — Google understands whole, normal pages. That breaks things, it doesn't help.
  • Rewriting your text "for AI" — search understands synonyms and meaning. A waste of time and money.
  • Overpaying for schema as if it were magic — structured data can help, but it is not a requirement for getting into AI answers. Don't let anyone sell it to you as the magic key.
