Why Can't I Find My Business on Google?

You type your business name into Google and it isn't where it should be. Before you pay anyone for "SEO," check the five most common reasons — in order of likelihood. Usually the cause is more boring, and cheaper to fix, than you think.

You type your business name, or "your trade + your city," into Google and you don't find yourself where you should be. First thought: "I'm invisible," "my website is broken," "I need to pay someone for SEO."

Stop for a second. Nine times out of ten the reason is more boring — and far cheaper to fix. Let's walk through it in order, starting with the most likely.

First: "Google" is two different things

When you say "I'm not on Google," you usually mean one of two completely different places:

  • Maps and the business listing — your Google Business Profile. This is where those tiles come from: name, rating, hours, a "call" button, on "near me" searches.
  • The regular results — the links to your website, further down.

This distinction matters, because most "I'm invisible" problems are a profile problem, not a website problem. If you don't know which of the two is missing, you fix the wrong thing.

Reason 1: You're checking it wrong

The most common "mistake," which isn't really a mistake at all. You search for your business logged in on your own phone, sitting inside your own shop. Google personalizes results: it knows you, it knows your location — and it shows you a picture nobody else sees.

Check it honestly: in an incognito window, signed out, or just ask a customer across town to type in your trade. And remember proximity — in local results you mostly show up to people near you, not across the whole city at once. That's normal, not a malfunction.

Reason 2: You don't have (or never claimed) a Google Business Profile

This is number one among the real causes of local invisibility. The profile doesn't exist, isn't verified, someone set it up years ago and nobody has access, or it got suspended. Without an active, verified profile you simply don't make it into those tiles at the top — no matter how good your website is.

Reason 3: The profile exists, but it's dead

The profile is there, but it has the wrong category, no hours, two photos from five years ago, and zero recent reviews. Google doesn't trust a profile like that enough to show you on "near me," because it can't be sure you're still in business. A live profile — correct category, current info, photos, steady reviews and replies — is the number one lever today.

Reason 4: Your website isn't even indexed

Sometimes the site simply never made it into Google: it's brand new, someone left the "no-index" switch on after launch, the robots.txt file is blocking it, or it's technically broken. You can check in ten seconds — type site:yourdomain.com into Google. If no pages show up, Google can't see it, and no amount of "SEO" gets around that until you fix the indexing.

Reason 5: The site is there, but slow or broken

A site that takes ages to load, falls apart on a phone, or throws errors lands lower. Google calls this Core Web Vitals — in plain terms: the site just has to work fast and correctly on mobile, because mobile is where your customer is looking for you.

What it ISN'T (and what not to pay for)

Before someone sells you a "magic SEO package" or "AI optimization": this is almost never what you need. You can't "buy" the top spot, and a separate "AI optimization" doesn't exist — it's good, plain fundamentals under a new name. If someone is selling you fear of a new buzzword, they're selling you air.

Where to start

In this order: claim and complete your Google Business Profile → check site:yourdomain.com to confirm the site is indexed → fix the site's health and speed → collect real reviews. It's dull, it's hygiene — but it's what decides this.

And if you're wondering whether you even need a website when you have a profile — that's a separate topic I break down here. I've laid out everything we build around local businesses in the Services section.

Type your trade and city into an incognito window today. If you don't find yourself where you should be — that's exactly the signal we start the conversation from.
